Police shoot man during confrontation at trailer park

A Las Vegas police officer shot a man at a trailer park Saturday morning, sending him to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officer Ramon Denby said police were responding to a 9:15 a.m. call to the Riviera Vegas Mobile Home Park, at 2083 Palm Street, near Fremont Street and Sahara Avenue.

A man living at the park had called police claiming he’d been beaten up, Denby said. When officers arrived, they found the victim with blood on his face.

The suspect, police determined, had gone to the victim’s trailer looking for a female companion, according to Denby. Police found the suspect in his mother’s trailer in the same park. Police said the suspect, whose name was not released, began throwing objects at the officers and threatened to kill them.

After an officer was hit in the head with an object, officers attempted to use Tasers on the man, which did not work. He then lunged at officers with two knives, and one officer fired a shot into his abdomen, Denby said.

The suspect was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center for surgery. Denby said doctors didn’t believe the suspect’s wounds were life-threatening.

The name of the suspect was not released. The Metropolitan Police Department is withholding the officer’s name for 48 hours, per department policy.
