Popular Death Valley vista Zabriskie Point to close for 6 months

One of the most popular overlooks at Death Valley National Park will close on Oct. 1 for six months of major repair work.

The National Park Service announced Monday that Zabriskie Point, in California 120 miles west of Las Vegas, will be closed through March 31 as contractors restore or rebuild unstable support walls and improve the overall safety conditions.

California Route 190 will remain open during the work, but the overlook and the surrounding area will be off limits.

The Pacific Coast Borax Company built the vista in the 1920s as a waystop for visitors in automobiles and named it after the company’s vice president and general manager, Christian Zabriskie, according to the Park Service.
