ANIMAL FOUNDATION
offers SENIOR DISCOUNT

The Animal Foundation, 655 N. Mojave Road, is launching its Seniors 4 Seniors program, offering local seniors who are 60 or older $50 discounts on adoption fees for dogs 3 years or older and cats 1 year or older.

The shelter receives more than 50,000 animals annually. Younger cats and dogs often find homes quickly and easily, while older pets frequently are passed over.

FREE fitness CLASS
offered FOR seniors

Seniors who are looking to get in shape can join the Senior Fitness Program from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Mountain Crest Neighborhood Services Center, 4701 N. Durango Drive.

Adaptable to all needs, the class allows those 50 or older to work with 1- to 5-pound weights, fitness balls and ropes to strengthen and stretch muscles. The program is also great for socialization.

Senior Idol auditions scheduled

Groups or individuals 50 or older who want to perform in the Senior Idol Talent Showcase can pick up an audition application at the front desk of the Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road. Applications are due April 27. Auditions are to be scheduled May 9-10 by appointment only. There is no cost to audition or perform in the showcase. The showcase is scheduled for June 14 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. For more information, call 229-6454.

TAKE TAI CHI FOR FREE

Free tai chi/ki gong classes are planned from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.  Wednesdays at the H2U MountainView Office, 3150 N. Tenaya Way, Suite 114.

Ki gong is a form of tai chi that helps balance internal energies. Ki gong is a slow-moving meditation exercise enabling awareness of breath, body and spirit.

Space is limited, and due to class popularity, participants can come to either the Monday or Wednesday class but not both. A doctor's release is required.

Lecture series to focus on the brain

The Symphony Park Lecture Series is scheduled to present "The Brain Demystified," a free seminar, from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Fifth Street School auditorium, 401 S. Fourth St.

Dr. Jeffrey Cummings of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and other experts are scheduled to share research into the relationship between creativity and the brain and how the brain controls intellectual and emotional existence and new approaches to brain imaging that reveal how the brain works in health, disease and aging. Doors open at 5 p.m.

A Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center dietitian helps cancer survivors and their loved ones learn about healthy food options after a cancer diagnosis.

'violin concerto' and lecture

Lou Harrison's "Violin Concerto" was completed in 1959 and uses an orchestra of unique percussion instruments as accompaniment.
