Red Cross ceremony to honor Southern Nevada heroes

The local American Red Cross is looking for a few unsung heroes.

The organization seeks nominations for its first Heroes of Southern Nevada Awards.

"There are so many stories of individual, selfless acts, but you seldom hear about them," said Kris Darnall, a spokeswoman for American Red Cross's Southern Nevada chapter.

The awards, which the organization plans to give annually, are meant to honor those who use their training and courage to prevent or respond to emergencies, often saving a life.

Award categories include adult and youth good Samaritans, military, firefighter, animal rescue, law enforcement, 911 dispatch and medical professionals. An award also will be given to a local charitable organization for its community impact.

Nominations are due by Aug. 30. The awards will be presented at a breakfast ceremony on Oct. 9.

The Review-Journal is one of the awards' sponsors.

For more information or to submit a nomination, visit www.redcrosslasvegas.org or call 791-3311.
