Released prisoner surrenders

After being accidentally released from jail Wednesday, a federal prisoner with a violent criminal history turned himself in early Friday.

Jessie Lee Earhart told U.S. marshals that he surrendered because of all the media attention his release attracted and because of law enforcement efforts to find him, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Fidencio Rivera said.

Earhart, 36, had been placed in the North Las Vegas Detention Center after being arrested Monday night for a probation violation, being a felon in possession of a firearm, Rivera said.

At 2:30 a.m. Friday, Earhart turned himself in to U.S. marshals at the Lloyd George U.S. Courthouse. Earhart was then taken back to the detention center, Rivera said.

A veteran civilian employee of the North Las Vegas Police Department was found responsible for Earhart's release, which was blamed on a clerical error, police spokesman Tim Bedwell said. Police wouldn't identify that person.
