Reno air race officials planning 2012 event

RENO -- The Reno Air Racing Association is planning a 2012 event to honor the people who died after a Sept. 16 crash at the Reno National Championship Air Races.

Association CEO Mike Houghton said he hopes to continue the 47-year competition or hold some other aviation event to give fans closure.

The permits needed to operate the association's annual pilots' safety school must be issued by February, according to a Reno Gazette-Journal report.

Houghton said those permits will be a good indication of whether permits will later be issued for the races.

The future of the races has been in doubt since a P-51 Mustang crashed and killed 10 spectators and the pilot, Jimmy Leeward. Others were sent to the hospital with critical injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
