Reno council prepares for 80 firefighter layoffs

RENO -- Reno officials are proceeding with plans to lay off about 80 firefighters because of the pending breakup between the city and Washoe County over fire services.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that the City Council on Wednesday authorized written layoff notices to be prepared.

The date of when the notices will be sent was left to City Manager Andrew Clinger.

Washoe County plans to start its own fire department, including the Truckee Meadows and Sierra fire protection districts, on July 1.

City officials said they want to give affected firefighters as much time as possible to make other career plans.
