Reno might require permits for popular pub crawl events

RENO - The city of Reno may start requiring permits for popular pub crawl events that bring costumed bar hoppers downtown but can also rack up extra police and cleanup costs.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the proposed ordinance would require pub crawls to register with the city, pay a $103 filing fee, buy insurance and compensate the city for policing and cleanup. The City Council is expected to review the proposal soon.

Some pub crawls already apply for permits, including the Santa Crawl, which draws crowds of partyers dressed as St. Nick. But others, including the Superhero Crawl and the Zombie Crawl, don't apply for permits.

City staffers say they get more calls for police service during the crawls.

Event organizers argue the events boost Reno's economy by drawing crowds downtown.
