San Diego State pulls ahead of CSU
March 11, 2010 - 3:58 pm
The fourth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs got 15 points from Chase Tapley in the first half and takes a 41-33 lead over Colorado State into the locker room in the second quarterfinal at the Mountain West Conference men’s basketball tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.
San Diego State has made 56 percent of its shots from the field and is outscoring the fifth-seeded Rams 10-1 at the free-throw line.
The Aztecs have 15 attempts already, while Colorado State has gone to the line just three times.
Adam Nigon had 10 points in the half, while Andy Ogide had six before being ejected.
Huge turning point
Colorado State was hanging around the game and trailed by just xxx points with 6:27 remaining in the first half.
Andy Ogide, the leading scorer and rebounded for the Rams, pulled down a rebound and was smacked in the head by San Diego State’s Brian Carlwell.
Ogide responded by throwing an elbow that sent Carlwell to the ground.
Carlwell came after Ogide and looked like he was ready to let the fists fly before being restrained.
The officials conferenced, then viewed a replay on the monitor, and decided to throw Ogide out of the game.
The situation greatly diminished Colorado State’s hopes of pulling an upset.
It was one of three technical fouls called against the Rams in the first half.
Head coach Tim Miles picked one up just before the intermission after a half in which just about every call went against his team.
Miles appeared intent on drawing the technical. He kept talking into an official’s ear for an entire possession, and when it was finally called, he yelled, “Yeah, that’s right.”
Don’t we have anyone else?
Colorado State committed a silly turnover in the first half and Tim Miles quickly turned to his bench to get the offending player out of the game.
Miles looked at his players and scanned from one end of the bench to the other.
He then walked to the end of the bench and back to his normal spot. He was never able to settle on anyone to send in to the game.
That’s all you’ve got coach. Nobody magically appeared since the start of the game.
Coaches are always recruiting, but your assistants hadn’t brought anyone in that you didn’t know about in the last 15 minutes.
That’s got to be a frustrating feeling for a coach. You want so badly to take out the player that just turned the ball over, but nobody on your bench is more appealing to you than the guy that messed up.
White out lifted
Billy White has had his share of injury problems this season.
The forward from Green Valley high school appeared to hurt his ankle and hobbled over to the San Diego State bench with about 8:00 remaining in the first half.
He spent several minutes during the media timeout trying to walk it off, then was fidgeting with his laces in an attempt to tighten his shoes.
Apparently it worked, White got up shortly thereafter and checked himself into the game.
