School district increasing security at Reno-area schools
RENO- The Washoe County School District is installing 6-foot-high chain link fencing around every school and new locks on classroom doors to increase security.
The $4.8 million effort is being funded by bonds and police grants. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the project is expected to be completed by May 2014.
District Police Chief Mike Mieras says the goal is to increase safety by establishing a single point of entry to deter intruders and make it easier to lockdown campuses when necessary.
He says the fencing will also reduce graffiti and truancy.
