Schools placed on lockdown after weapon fired
A police officer's firing of a weapon at a fleeing suspect in the northeast valley Tuesday morning caused several nearby schools to be placed on lockdown, authorities said.
Las Vegas police said the incident occurred at 10 a.m. Officers stopped two men on the 1400 block of Sandhill Road, near Lamb Boulevard and Owens Avenue, for jaywalking.
As officers were questioning the pair, one of them fled. As two officers gave chase, one suspect pointed a gun at them. That's when one of the officers fired several rounds at the suspect, who was not injured.
The suspect dropped the gun and continued running, police said. He was taken into custody at a nearby apartment complex and identified as 22-year-old Ray Ivory. He faces recommended charges of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon against an officer and two counts of resisting arrest with a weapon.
The second suspect, who didn't flee, was identified as Fredrico Ramon Gordon Jr., 24, of Las Vegas. Gordon was arrested on a recommended charge of pedestrian in the roadway, a misdemeanor.
Officer Bill Cassell, a police spokesman, said investigators are looking into whether Gordon played a role in a car burglary in which a 9 mm handgun was stolen.
Michael Rodriguez, a spokesman with the Clark County School District, said 10 schools were placed on lockdown because of the shooting. He said the last school was lifted from the lockdown at 2:10 p.m.
Police did not identify the officer who fired shots. In accordance with department policy the officer's name will be released 48 hours after the shooting.
