Search continues for missing teen hiker
An 18-year-old Henderson teenager who went missing a week ago in northern Utah’s Green Canyon has not yet been found, authorities reported Wednesday.
Andrea Celina Roye was dropped off at the mouth of the canyon to “find herself” Aug. 5 by her boyfriend, Cache County sheriff’s office Lt. Matt Bilodeau said.
When she didn’t return late Thursday morning, her boyfriend called police to report her missing.
Police and volunteers who’ve been searching for Roye have come up empty so far. She was last seen Thursday afternoon by a group of campers in the Tony Grove area, Bilodeau said, when she asked for a plate of food.
This gives police enough hope to continue the search, he said.
“She had given us some indication, through MySpace and interviews with people who have associated with her, that she’s not happy with people,” Bilodeau said. “She wants to be away from humans and one with nature.”
Because they aren’t sure of Roye’s mind set, he said they aren’t sure where to look. She could be injured somewhere they haven’t searched, or she could be purposely avoiding people, he said.
“There’s plenty of water up there,” he said. “Although she could be running low on food.”
Another option is that Roye could be attempting to hitchhike to Yellowstone National Park located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Fliers about her have been circulated between Utah and routes to Yellowstone.
“She’s especially drawn to wolves, hence the reason she might go to Yellowstone,” he said.
Roye’s family could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
Bilodeau said the area Roye was hiking was especially rugged, with a lot of steep cliffs and loose terrain.
With 300 square miles of search area, and one-third being wilderness, he said he hopes she appears on her own.
“At this point, we won’t give up,” he said.
