Semitrailer crash, fire temporarily closes I-80 near state line

RENO -- A semitrailer truck crashed on U.S. Interstate 80 near the Nevada-California line, sparking a brush fire and closing a stretch of the highway over the Sierra for about three hours Saturday.

About 50 firefighters responded to the fire that burned across the interstate and consumed an estimated 25 acres of brush and trees.

Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Chris Greb said the truck swiped the guardrail in a construction zone and rolled over an embankment about 3:15 p.m. He said the fuel tanks ruptured and caught on fire.

The driver was taken to a Reno hospital, but his injuries were not believed to be serious.
