Sentencing in Darren Mack case delayed

RENO -- A judge has postponed a two-day sentencing hearing that had been scheduled next week for Darren Mack to allow more time to consider his request to withdraw his pleas.

The former wealthy pawn shop owner was to be sentenced next Thursday and Friday in Reno on his pleas to killing his wife and shooting and wounding the judge who was handling their divorce in 2006.

But Mack has since hired a new lawyer and wants to withdraw those pleas and go to trial. Mack contends he was coerced into the plea deal.

District Judge Douglas Herndon will hear arguments on those motions Tuesday and Wednesday. Because of an extensive witness list, the judge said he will keep the following two days free as well in case more time is needed.

Sentencing, if it proceeds, has been rescheduled for Feb. 7-8.
