Settlement reached in two police lawsuits

Las Vegas police fiscal affairs committee approved a $145,000 settlement Wednesday to the wife and child of a man killed by police in 1991.

The settlement was approved for Judy Walthers and Charles Walthers Jr. after the attorneys for the family and police met last week.

The man who was killed, Charles Walthers, was shot Nov. 11, 1991, after he answered the door to his home brandishing a handgun.

Police had gone to the 4800 E. Cheyenne Ave. residence to answer a domestic disturbance call.

In another settlement approved during Wednesday's meeting, Kenneth and Marilyn Walther were awarded $14,000 to settle a civil rights claim. Kenneth Walther was arrested June 8, 1990, after a domestic dispute. During the arrest, Walther suffered a broken arm.
