Sheriff probes man’s death during arrest

RENO -- The Washoe County sheriff's office is investigating the Christmas night death of a man authorities say was armed with a dinner fork and struggled with three Reno police officers during his arrest.

In a statement released by the sheriff's office Wednesday, police reported 33-year-old Micah S. Abbey stopped breathing during his arrest a little before 8 p.m. Sunday at a home on Crystalline Drive. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Washoe County coroner didn't immediately determine a cause of death.

The Reno officers were responding to a report of a domestic disturbance and a man beating and threatening others in the house when they arrested Abbey after a "lengthy struggle."

The three Reno police officers are on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
