KINGMAN, Ariz. - A 40-year-old man was found guilty Friday afternoon in Kingman, Ariz., in a 2001 homicide in the northwest Arizona community of Golden Valley.
A Mohave County Superior Court jury convicted Chip Smith of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 39-year-old Chris Peyton.
Investigators initially believed Peyton was killed in a single-vehicle crash. They later determined he rolled his vehicle after he had been shot by Smith.
Smith's first trial ended in a hung jury. His conviction in a second trial was overturned on appeal.
When he is sentenced June 27 for his conviction in the third trial, he faces up to 22 years. Prosecutor Ken Skousen said he will be given about nine years' credit for time served.
