Simulated evacuation to take place on Mount Charleston

Las Vegas police will conduct an emergency drill Saturday morning on Mount Charleston.

Police said the simulated evacuation had been planned for months before the Cathedral fire forced a voluntary evacuation of the mountain last week.

The exercise will begin at 10 a.m. in a command post located at The Resort at Mount Charleston, 525 Kyle Canyon Road. The drill will conclude at 1 p.m.

Police said no residents will be displaced during the exercise. Police said most of the procedures that will be practiced in the exercise were successfully used during the Cathedral fire.

The 20-acre blaze that was sparked by an illegal campfire began July 1 and was fully contained by Monday.

The agencies participating in Saturday's drill include Las Vegas police, Nevada Highway Patrol, the Nevada Fire Safe Council, the U.S. Forest Service and the Nevada Division of Forestry.
