Single vehicle collision claims life

A 49-year-old motorist died early Sunday after crashing a sport-utility vehicle into a block wall and a light pole in the northwest valley, Las Vegas police said.

Police did not name the deceased, who was from Las Vegas.

The crash occurred about 3:25 a.m. on Cheyenne Avenue, west of El Capitan Way, police said.

The driver of a 2003 Ford Explorer was eastbound on Cheyenne when the vehicle veered south and struck a median, police said. The driver lost control, drove up on a sidewalk and struck a wall and a light pole before coming to a stop. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The accident, which is the 103rd fatal traffic collision of the year under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police, is under investigation.
