Some stories prompt widely differing points of profane view

Sometimes the comments on our online news stories say volumes about the nature of our society today — the level of sympathy, the crudeness of discourse, the willingness to excoriate from behind the protection of anonymity.

Take the comments posted today on the story about Metro being sued by a jail inmate after he was burned by a flash-bang device used to disorient him while officers restrained him.

Herb, a frequent early commenter, wrote: “There should be no lawsuit. It should be routine to burn violent prisoners. They should be tied up and then have scorching hot water poured over them. Prisons should be nothing short of Hell on Earth. No more ‘shot callers’, The guards should be in charge, if any prisoner tries to become the dominant leader the guards should beat him to a pulp and put him in his place.”

A person who used the pseudonym Furious countered, “Extremely professional? Give me a break. These Nazi pigs should be thrown in prison and left to rot, the way their Gestapo counterparts were thrown in jail and left to rot after Neuremburg. And what are these pigs doing with flash grenades anyway?”

Take a look at the video and see what you think.

Can you comment in a civil manner or is this too divisive too remain calm?
