Special session extended to 5 p.m. Monday

Gov. Jim Gibbons tonight signed a proclamation extending the special session of the Nevada Legislature until 5 p.m. Monday as lawmakers worked toward passage of a budget balancing deal.

The proclamation also adds to the special session agenda a bill that could create up to 16,000 jobs, according to Gibbons communications director Daniel Burns.

Burns said the secretary of state still needs to sign that proclamation and send it over to the Legislature.

Earlier Sunday, Gibbons and lawmakers announced they had reached accord on a plan to balance the budget.

The previous deadline set by the governor was 11:59 p.m. Lawmakers had challenged his authority to tell them when to go home.
