Standoff ends after man sets fire to estranged wife’s house

A man upset over his pending divorce set his estranged wife's house on fire and tried to commit suicide during a Friday afternoon standoff with Henderson police.
Officers were called to the home on the 200 block of Hyssop Court, near Burkholder Boulevard and Racetrack Road, about 2 p.m. for a welfare check, police spokesman Keith Paul said.
The man in the house told police dispatch that he would shoot any officers who came to the home, so police cordoned off the area and tried to negotiate with him, Paul said.
Several nearby homes were evacuated as negotiators talked to the man, who at one point indicated he would surrender but did not, he said.
Instead he set the house aflame, prompting Henderson firefighters to respond and put out the fire. When the smoke cleared, firefighters spotted a man in the backyard, he said.
SWAT officers found the man with self-inflicted wounds, and he was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center for treatment, Paul said.
No report on his condition, or on damage to the house, was available Friday night.
The home is owned by Chad and Lori Kreiser, according to county land records. She filed for divorce in June, and he filed his own case a week later, court records show.
