State must raise $50,000 to keep grant for roof

RENO -- Time is running out for Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs, which must raise $50,000 by Dec. 31 to retain a matching grant to replace the roof at Lake Tahoe's historic Thunderbird Lodge, the home of multimillionaire George Whittell Jr. until 1969.

The Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society manages the facility, offering tours of the mansion. The state provided $175,000 to re-roof the complex, and the lodge has secured further donations of $125,000. But $50,000 of that will be withdrawn if a similar amount isn't matched by Dec. 31.
