Strip turns out the lights for Earth Hour

In what has turned into an annual event, the Strip celebrated Earth Hour tonight between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The Strip's casinos powered down their exterior lighting and marquees to raise awareness about climate change. Interior lights remained on. RM Seafood at Mandalay Bay and other strip businesses were scheduled to dim their lights to observe the occasion.

Earth Hour is a worldwide initiative launched in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund. Strip casinos, which have participated in the past, joined icons such as the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace and Empire State Building in going dark for an hour. Libya took part in the event for the first time, with its national museum powering down.

Casinos owned by Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, Wynn Resorts, Las Vegas Sands and Boyd Gaming participated this year. The LVH and Trump International also went dark.
