Suspect in death of Nevada professor awaiting extradition from Mexico

RENO -- More than four months after his arrest, a 50-year-old man charged in the murder of a University of Nevada, Reno professor remains in a Mexico City jail awaiting extradition to the United States, authorities said.

Mohamed Kalam Kamalaudeen, also known as Ricky Barge, was arrested in September in Mexico on an immigration hold issued by Mexican officials.

He's accused of stabbing Judy Calder, 64, who was his business associate. Calder also was an associate professor in UNR's Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

Washoe County Assistant District Attorney Bruce Hahn said extradition proceedings take a long time.

"Right now, we're just sort of waiting on the (Justice Department's) Office of International Affairs," he told the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza. "These things can take months, sometimes years."

William Felner, a spokesman for the Office of International Affairs, said the extradition proceedings are continuing but offered no timeline.

Kamalaudeen fled to Mexico from Arizona shortly before his arrest, police said.

He also is wanted on a first-degree murder charge in a 15-year-old Canadian case.

He's accused of orchestrating the September 1993 robbery-related stabbing death of a Toronto man by a teenager.

Authorities said Calder was killed Aug. 18 at a Reno business. Her body was found two weeks later along old Highway 93 in Elko County, about 375 miles northeast of Reno.
