RENO -- A 50-year-old man has been extradited to Nevada from Mexico City to face charges in the August slaying of a University of Nevada, Reno professor.
Mohamed Kamaludeen was turned over to Nevada authorities on Thursday at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and later flown to Reno under police escort.
Kamaludeen, also known as Rickey Barge, was being held without bail Friday in the Washoe County Jail on one count of murder.
He's accused of stabbing 64-year-old Judy Calder, who was his business associate. Calder was an associate professor in UNR's Department of Human Development and Family Studies.
"We're very ecstatic he's back here and will be held to answer for what he was involved in," Reno police Lt. Robert McDonald said Friday. "(The victim's husband) James Calder has phoned and said he's very pleased he's back in town."
Authorities said Calder was killed Aug. 18 at a Reno business, Imaging Technologies. Her body was found two weeks later in Elko County, about 375 miles northeast of Reno.
Deputy District Attorney Bruce Hahn said he had to agree not to seek the death penalty as a condition of the extradition. Extradition has historically been a sensitive question in Mexico, which still refuses to extradite anyone who could receive the death penalty.
"We have to respect our sovereign neighbors," Hahn said Friday. "We don't look at things the same way but we certainly respect their views.
"The cooperation from the Mexican government was terrific," he added.
Kamaludeen will be arraigned sometime early next week in Reno Justice Court, Hahn said.
Kamaludeen also was being sought on a first-degree murder charge in a Canadian case.
He's accused of orchestrating the September 1993 robbery-related stabbing death of a 61-year-old Toronto man by a teenager.
