Suspected ‘Dapper Bandit’ arrested at border crossing

SAN DIEGO -- The man suspected of being the "Dapper Bandit" is now wearing a jail uniform after being arrested at a San Diego County border crossing.

The FBI said 41-year-old John Richard Martinez of Fresno was nabbed in San Ysidro on Friday as he tried to enter the United States from Mexico.

The San Diego Union Tribune said Martinez was booked on suspicion of holding up the U.S. Bank in Point Loma Heights on Monday and USA Payday Advance in Mira Mesa on Dec. 20.

He earned the nickname "Dapper Bandit" because of the stylish hat, sport coat and dress slacks he wore during at least one alleged holdup.

Martinez is suspected in four more robberies across California since November.

Authorities said Martinez was arrested thanks to tips from the public.
