SWAT team planned to handle university system cuts

Higher education leaders will form a "SWAT team" to figure out how to handle expected budget cuts, it was decided today.

At a special Board of Regents meeting this morning, Vice Chancellor Dan Klaich told regents that he would form the team to figure out how much of a tuition increase is feasible, how to deal with legislatively mandated salary cuts to some employees and other issues related to the budget cuts.

A legislative committee has agreed to cuts of 12.5 percent in state support to the higher education system, which includes the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Nevada State College at Henderson and the College or Southern Nevada.

It is expected that regents will increase tuition in the area of 5 percent, both this year and next year.

Regents did not decide on the increase today; rather, they will likely readdress the issue in June.
