Teamsters chief to challenge election
A Teamsters union chief in Las Vegas is promising to challenge the results of an election that would put three new leaders atop the 5,000-plus member local.
Local 631 secretary-treasurer and principal officer John Phillipenas said Wednesday he intends to show the vote to replace him with Tom Blitsch was "mishandled," and that hundreds of votes should not have been counted.
The unofficial vote has Cheryl Schmidt replacing Kevin Hardison as president, and Javon Jefferson replacing Don Weimer as vice president.
Votes cast in recent weeks were tallied Friday and were awaiting certification by an arbitrator based in San Diego.
The local represents convention workers, trash collectors, construction workers, United Parcel Service drivers and Nevada National Security Site employees.
