Ten accept buyouts at Reno newspaper

RENO -- Ten employees of the Reno-Gazette Journal, including five senior writers and editors, have accepted voluntary buyouts to retire before the end of the year, the newspaper reported Thursday on its Web site.

Managing Editor Tonia Cunning, columnist Cory Farley, reporter Don Cox, sportswriter Steven Sneddon and newsroom administrative assistant Sharon Genung are the veterans retiring from the newsroom.

The buyouts were offered to employees who were more than 50 years of age and who had worked for the newspaper's parent Gannett Co. Inc. for more than 20 years, according to the newspaper.

Employees were given two weeks of pay for every year of service.

"Ten of our employees made their own personal decisions to move on to new opportunities," publisher Ted Power said. "We will miss their contributions and thank them for all they have done for the RGJ."

The newspaper has 450 employees.
