Third hepatitis A case identified in Reno area
RENO — Washoe County health officials have identified a third case of hepatitis A as part of a multi-state outbreak linked to frozen berries sold by Costco.
The latest Washoe County case is among more than 125 reported since late March in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Hawaii.
The product is sold as Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend of berries.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the most likely vehicle for the virus appears to be a common shipment of pomegranate seeds Townsend Farms received from Turkey.
Townsend Farms and Costco recalled the product June 3.
Two other products with the pomegranate seeds also have been pulled from grocery freezers: Harris Teeter Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend and Woodstock Frozen Organic Pomegranate Kernels.
