With more than 100,000 iPhone applications, and more coming daily, you just
knew there had to be a least a few dedicated to the science of trimming
down. Since this is the time of year for resolutions, many people are at
least thinking about shedding pounds and going healthier. So I unearthed a
handful of apps that may help you get fitter.

— Lose It!
This free app helps you stick to a program by tracking calorie intake and
calorie burning activities. An article in today’s New York Times notes that
this program includes nutritional information on more than 21,000 food
items, including many not included in the Agriculture Department’s
database.

— GoodFoodNearYou
Another freebie. Just as the name implies, the app uses your location to
help locate nearby healthy dining choices.

— Fast Food Calorie Counter
By helping you find food value on the value menu, this 99-cent program
directs you toward better decisions at the drive-through.

— iWatchr
Track your Weight Watchers points with this 99-cent program from the
weight-loss giant.

— RunKeeper
This freebie is an iPhone log for runners, storing data on distance,
duration, speed and pace of each run.

There are many more apps in the health and fitness categories of the iTunes
store, and the list is growing for other smartphones, too.

Now excuse me while I take a walk around the building. That’s 2,500 steps
down today and 7,500 to go.
