Three-month state tax amnesty period begins

Gov. Jim Gibbons announced a new tax amnesty program that, starting Thursday, allows people or businesses that are behind in paying state taxes to do so now without facing sanctions.

"This is an opportunity for anyone to get caught up with their state taxes and face no penalties or interest," Gibbons said.

A similar amnesty program in 2008 collected $41 million. Gibbons was authorized by the special legislative session in February to launch a new tax amnesty program.

The Department of Taxation will administer the program to allow delinquent taxpayers to get caught up between now and Sept. 30.

For an amnesty application and more information, visit the Department of Taxation's website at http://tax.state.nv.us/ or contact the Call Center at 866- 962-3707. Applicants can also visit Department of Taxation offices in Carson City, Reno, Las Vegas or Henderson.
