A Las Vegas police officer and Marine veteran was gunned down at his North Las Vegas home early Thursday during what police are calling an attempted robbery.
Trevor Nettleton, 30, had just finished his shift and was in street clothes when he was attacked in the garage of his home near Lone Mountain Road and Bruce Street, police said.
Prentice Marshall, 18, Saul Williams Jr., 20, and a 17-year-old who was not identified by North Las Vegas police were arrested in connection with the slaying.
Nettleton exchanged gunfire with his assailants, wounding Marshall, who was booked into jail after his release from the hospital Friday morning.
The officer's wife and two young children were home at the time of the shooting, as was his mother, who was visiting for Thanksgiving.
Nettleton's father said his son joined the police force three years ago to serve his community the way he served his country.
Nettleton served in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a stint at the White House.

FINALLY, SOME DEFENSE
A day after he was fired, UNLV football coach Mike Sanford blamed the program's failures on substandard facilities and a lack of community and university support, but never mentioned himself as part of the problem.
"This is not a coach issue," he said in his news conference.
Sanford, 54, was fired a day after the Rebels lost 45-17 at Air Force.
UNLV is 4-7 this season and 15-43 in nearly five seasons under Sanford.

LAS VEGAS LAYOFFS
Las Vegas will lay off 19 workers and cut another $8 million from its budget by the end of January to offset declines in sales tax revenue.
Additionally, vacant positions will be frozen, construction projects will be shelved and some of the city's highest paid workers will have their salaries cut by 5 percent.

CRITICS STIMULATED
A government Web site tracking spending and job creation via the $787 billion federal stimulus program listed more than $1 billion coming to Nevada, including more than $7.7 million for the state's 32nd, 22nd, 9th and 25th congressional districts.
The only problem? Those districts don't exist.
Nevada was not excluded from errors on Recovery.gov that are giving critics of the Obama administration fodder to lambaste the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

POLICE: CHARGE DESAI
The thousands of Southern Nevadans who want to see Dr. Dipak Desai behind bars could get their wish.
In their final report submitted to prosecutors, Las Vegas police investigators recommended criminal charges for the doctor and others for their roles in the hepatitis C outbreak blamed on unsafe injection practices.
Among the recommended charges was felony neglect of patients.
FRIDAY
UMC RECORDS LEAKED?
The FBI is investigating claims that patient information was leaked from University Medical Center, violating federal privacy laws.
Hospital officials suspect at least one employee disseminated and possibly sold documents with confidential information about patients to local attorneys.
"We're trying to find out how widespread it is," hospital spokesman Rick Plummer said. "It goes against everything we stand for. Whatever attorney's office this went to should be very nervous."
