Two face charges in crime spree

A grand jury has indicted two men who Las Vegas police say went on a valleywide crime spree that resulted in the deaths of two people.

Gregory Hover, 38, and Richard Freeman, 18, face multiple felony charges, including murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, robbery and burglary.

The grand jury indicted Hover and Freeman in the slaying of Prisma Ivette Contreras.

Authorities allege Hover and Freeman kidnapped Contreras as she left her job at the Hooters Hotel, took her to Boulder City where they raped her, strangled her and cut her throat.

The two defendants then burned Contreras' body inside her car, authorities allege. The 21-year-old's body was found Jan. 15 south of Boulder City.

Hover and Freeman also are charged in the shooting death of Julio Romero, 64, in his home Jan. 25.

Prosecutors are in the midst of a preliminary hearing in that case, which is expected to resume April 29.

Authorities said Hover, who was employed as a process server for Junes Legal Service, a local legal support business, visited Romero's home to serve papers to a friend of Romero's .

Early the next morning, Hover broke into the house and killed Romero, according to an arrest report.

Hover is alleged to have then forced Romero's wife, Roberta, into a closet, shooting her in the face. She survived.

Both defendants face charges that indicate aggravating circumstances for an automatic review by the district attorney's death penalty committee.

Police said they believe the two also are responsible for business robberies, robberies at ATMs and other pedestrian hold-ups dating to late 2009.
