Two killed in collision on Las Vegas Beltway

Two motorists were killed Sunday morning when a wrong-way driver slammed head-on into an oncoming car on the Las Vegas Beltway near the Decatur Boulevard exit, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

About 6:05 a.m., authorities received a call about a Nissan sedan that was speeding south in the northbound lanes of the Beltway near Flamingo Road, trooper Kevin Honea said. Witnesses told authorities that the Nissan was going 80 to 90 mph.

A trooper saw the wrong-way driver on the freeway but lost sight of the vehicle while in the process of turning around, Honea said.

About eight minutes after the call, the woman was traveling on the Beltway near Decatur in the southwest part of the valley when she crashed into the front of a Lincoln sedan, Honea said.

A woman who was driving the Nissan and a man who was driving the Lincoln were declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Honea said that there were no obvious signs that drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision, but the investigation still was ongoing Sunday night.
