Two sides to every story

Not everyone is thrilled about the decision by officials at Wells Fargo to cancel a planned employee junket in Las Vegas in response to public outcry.

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.VA, called the trip "outrageous" and the company "tone-deaf." The bank originally defended the trip but backed off under the hail of criticism, The Associated Press reported.

Michael Zaletel of the hotel-booking Web site www.i4Vegas.com disagrees and says the decision to cancel was a mistake, even though Wells Fargo took $25 billion in government bailout money.

"While I understand people being upset about a bank that took bailout money from the government having a corporate meeting in Las Vegas, I find it ironic that Wells Fargo's decision and others like it will only serve to make matters worse in the economy," Zaletel said in an e-mail to the Review-Journal. "The banks clearly aren't lending because they are afraid of the risks, if they also stop spending because they are afraid of public opinion, and just keep the bailout money in a vault, the economy will only continue to deteriorate."

To add insult to injury, the event was to be held at Wynn Las Vegas, where it was recently announced employees would be taking pay cuts because business is down.
