Unpaid leave program extended for year

Clark County's voluntary unpaid furlough program was extended for a year Tuesday by a vote of the commissioners.

The program was set to expire June 30. Since it began in late 2008, 34,382 unpaid leave hours have been logged, saving the county almost $1.3 million.

The savings include $506,000 in the general operating fund.

Union firefighters can't participate because they would be paid time-and-a-half to fill in for co-workers taking furloughs, costing the county more money, County Manager Virginia Valentine said.

Furloughs also don't apply to agencies more regional in scope, such as the Las Vegas Valley Water District and the Metropolitan Police Department.
