Uranium mining planned in Arizona

A Canadian-based company has decided to move forward with the first uranium mining activity in northern Arizona in the last 20 years.

No formal protests had been filed against the project as of Monday, which was the deadline for making complaints.

President Ron Hochstein said Denison Mines will put up to 10 people to work immediately at its Arizona 1 mine, about 45 miles south of Fredonia. Up to 50 people will work at the mine once it is ready for production early next year.

"It's very exciting and we look forward to adding Arizona 1 to our production base and creating local employment and contributing to the local economy," Hochstein said.

The company plans to mine up to 72,000 tons of uranium ore over a three-year period.

The company will use trucks to transport ore for processing at its White Mesa mill, near Blanding, Utah.
