Valley man surrenders in standoff

An 11-hour standoff between police and a Las Vegas man involving his 1-year-old child ended peacefully with the man's surrender and arrest early Friday morning.

The baby was not harmed.

Jose Ponce, 26, was arrested at 6:15 a.m. after the standoff in the 4300 block of Paramount Street, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers received a domestic disturbance call to the home about 7:15 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, a woman exited the home stating a man and infant child were inside.

Several people in the neighborhood near Craig Road and Las Vegas Boulevard North were evacuated while authorities tried to get the man to come outside, police spokesman Bill Cassell said.

"In a situation like this, we would consider them armed unless we knew otherwise," Cassell said.

The man was communicative with police and was seen moving around throughout the night, police said. He left the house around 6:15 a.m. without incident or injury and was arrested.

The child, whose gender and name weren't released by police, was not harmed.

Ponce was charged with one count of child endangerment.

He also was booked on outstanding warrants for possession of a stolen vehicle, domestic violence battery and drug charges.

Cassell said Ponce, who refused media interviews while being held at the Clark County Detention Center, was released Friday pending court appearances.

Cassell said he didn't know what the original dispute in the home was about.
