Washoe County investigation into fire engine damage closed

The Washoe County Sheriff's office says it has no suspects and is closing an investigation stemming from a dispute between the county and the city of Reno over damaged fire engines.

Deputies agreed in late June to investigate allegations of tampering with electric plugs and hydraulic systems on equipment transferred between the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and the Reno Fire Department as part of a recent deconsolidation.

The sheriff says the equipment lifts in question had been made inoperable and while that was part of normal safe operations, it prevented gathering forensic evidence that might have led to a suspect.

Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said the equipment was fully operable when Reno Fire handed it over.

The sheriff's office said it's no longer investigating any related complaints.
