Washoe County rental car tax plan for stadium opposed by airport authority
A proposed increase in the Washoe County rental car tax to help refinance a distressed $55 million loan for Reno's Aces Ballpark is drawing opposition.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority expressed concerns about the plan in an internal memo dated Oct. 3. The authority said the tax increase could put a damper on the amount of money tourists spend in the region, affecting hotels, ski resorts and the airport.
The Reno City Council and Washoe County Commission are considering annual taxpayer subsidies of $1.5 million over the next 30 years.
Owners of the Reno Aces Triple A baseball team are proposing that public financing be combined with new private equity to refinance the stadium construction loan due in 14 months.
