Water skier dies at Lake Mead

A 25-year-old man was killed in a water skiing wipe-out Thursday evening on Lake Mead, authorities said.

The man, who is believed to have been visiting from the United Kingdom, was skiing at high speed in the Boulder Basin area of the lake when he hit the water and was injured.

"He was skiing behind a speedboat," said Roxanne Dey, spokeswoman for Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

No other vessel was involved in the incident, and the area where he was skiing is a deep part of the lake, Dey said.

A park ranger performed CPR for about 30 minutes before the man was pronounced dead, Dey said.

The Clark County coroner will determine the man's cause of death. He is the 12th person to die at Lake Mead National Recreation Area this year.
