WEATHER COULDN’T BE BETTER
Second-round play is under way at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and it’s another perfect day for golf, with temperatures in the low 70s and calm winds.
It’ll be interesting to see how Marc Turnesa, the co-first round leader fares playing in the morning when the greens at TPC Summerlin are fresh. So far, so good for Turnesa, who is 4-under-par through eight holes.
Nick Watney, the former Fresno State star who moved to Henderson last August to be closer to golf guru Butch Harmon, continues to play well. He’s a shot back of Turnesa at minus-13 after playing the back nine (his first nine) to 4-under. He appears to be making a statement that he’s going to be a factor this weekend.
The afternoon group tees off at 11:30 a.m. Zach Johnson goes off at 12:08 p.m. from the first tee.
WHERE’S JUSTIN?
It’s interesting that Timberlake has not been seen at TPC Summerlin the past two days. Our congenial host apparently has been rehearsing for tonight’s big celebrity concert at Planet Hollywood. The money from the concert goes directly to the Shriners, so he gets a pass for his absence out at the golf course.
Tonight’s concert lineup is impressive, much more so than Wednesday’s celebrity pro-am lineup was. 50 Cent. Boyz II Men. Rihanna. The Jonas Brothers. Leona Lewis. Will.I.Am. Adam Levine of Maroon 5. That’s pretty good star power. Even by Las Vegas standards.
Timberlake is expected to show up for Saturday’s 5 p.m. golf clinic with Butch Harmon at the practice range. If you’re planning on going out, it will be your best opportunity to see Justin. The next time you see him will be when he hands the trophy to the winner on Sunday.
SUPER SUPER
Given the raves TPC Summerlin drew from the players, particularly the play of the greens, a tip of the golf hat to course superintendent Dale Hahn and his staff for getting the course in shape for the pros.
MOVING DAY
With such low scores being posted, today’s cut of the 132-player field figures to come somewhere around 6- or 7-under. The field will be reduced to 70 plus any ties. A lot of guys who played good golf are going to find themselves going home tonight because of the low, low scores.
