A day after he was ousted from the Nevada Assembly, Steven Brooks was accused of leading California police on a car chase and fighting a police dog.

A Democrat from North Las Vegas, Brooks was arrested on numerous charges after the Friday morning incident on Interstate 15 near Victorville, Calif.

Brooks, whose behavior has become erratic in recent months, was ousted from the Assembly in a voice vote Thursday. Legislators said they feared for their safety while he was around. It was the first time in state history that a legislator had been kicked out.

Brooks’ troubles began Jan. 19 when he was arrested and accused of threatening Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick. He also faces charges relating to a February domestic violence arrest.

Monday

Marshal accused of misdeeds steps down

Amid misconduct allegations, the marshal overseeing Family Court marshals will step down to become a rank-and-file marshal assigned to a judge.

Lt. Steve Rushfield made the announcement at a briefing of marshals in Family Court.

Rushfield is suspected of participating in a cover-up of assault allegations against another marshal and was the subject of an internal investigation into allegations that he choked a 23-year-old woman restrained in a chair in a holding cell.

Aviation Nation air show canceled

Nellis Air Force Base officials announced they will cancel the Aviation Nation air show scheduled for November because of budget cuts.

Cancellation of the state’s largest free public event came after the Thunderbirds season was canceled.

“Aviation Nation is a very popular event for our community, and I deeply regret our inability to host a Nellis Open House this year,” said a statement from 99th Air Base Wing Commander Col. Barry Cornish.

He said the Air Force was making combat readiness a higher priority than the show.

UNLV drops partner in stadium efforts

After working together more than two years, UNLV dumped its private partner in its effort to build an on-campus domed stadium.

The announcement came after Majestic Realty, owned by California billionaire developer Ed Roski, had committed $360 million to the stadium project.

Don Snyder, UNLV’s hotel college dean and stadium point man, said the private developer had made it too difficult to win support from Las Vegas’ resort industry. UNLV’s decision means the demise of a plan to build a student village on the campus, which was to include student housing and retail space.

Guard accused of affair with child killer

A state corrections officer faces felony charges alleging that he had a sexual affair with child killer Monique Maestas.

Correctional officer Eugenio Dimas, 51, faces one count each of misconduct of a public officer and voluntary sexual conduct between a prisoner and another person .

The criminal complaint alleges the affair took place between Sept. 25 and Oct. 14 at the Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Center in Las Vegas.

Maestas helped her older brother stab a 3-year-old girl to death and paralyze her 10-year-old half-sister in 2003 because the girls’ mother and her boyfriend had sold them fake methamphetamine.

State, Las Vegas jobless numbers improve

Unemployment fell in both Nevada and Las Vegas in February.

The state’s jobless rate was 9.6 percent, down from 9.7 percent in January and 11.8 percent in February 2012, the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported.

The rate dropped to 9.8 percent in Las Vegas, compared with 10.8 percent a month earlier and 12.1 percent a year before.

It was a mixed picture, with the state having fewer jobs than a year ago.
