West valley home damaged by blaze

A fire that started in an outside trash can caused extensive damage to a west valley home on Thursday.
The Las Vegas Fire Department said flames erupted from a trash container on the back patio of a home at 1681 City View Court, near Cimarron Road and Oakey Boulevard. A man and his son battled the flames with a garden hose for several minutes, then left the home.
Investigators believe heat from the container, which was propped against a wood and stucco column supporting the backyard patio cover, spread to the column. Flames broke out inside the hollow column, and they spread to the attic area and across the house, authorities said.
The fire caused heavy damage to two attic areas in the house. The second floor of the home was damaged by falling debris. Investigators believe it caused roughly $800,000 in damage.
No people or pets were injured in the incident.
