What to do on your summer vacation

Because middle school guidance counselors are so overwhelmed these days, a school official is worried students might not know about a free summer program being offered to sixth- and seventh-graders at the Andre Dawson School, 10845 W. Desert Inn Road.

The academic program, which runs July 1 to Aug. 7, will focus on climate change and water issues.

Kevin Cloud, the Dawson foundation director, said the program will spend as much per pupil as the Clark County School District spends on kids each year, or about $6,000 a student. Besides a full school day and curriculum full of experts and field trips, the program will offer free transportation to the school.

Because of a lack of applications, the deadline has been indefinitely extended. Applications and more information is available at http://www.dawsoncenter.org/summer.html
