Wind advisory in effect for Thursday

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Southern Nevada, portions of southeastern California and Northwestern Arizona from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Strong winds are expected to develop ahead of an unusually strong area of low pressure, according to the service's Web site. South to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching over 50 mph. These winds might lift dust and sand, affecting visibility on roadways. Motorists should use extra caution and be alert to rapidly changing conditions.

A wind advisory means that winds of 30 to 39 mph and/or wind gusts of 40 to 57 mph are expected.
