Woman gets suspended sentence in embezzlement

CARSON CITY -- A former Nevada employee has received a suspended sentence for stealing from the state's Victims of Crime fund.

Tonya Walker was convicted by a Las Vegas jury of four felony counts. The attorney general's office says Walker created false claims on the agency's computer program and embezzled more than $50,000.

Her husband and mother each were convicted of aiding and abetting.

Walker was sentenced Tuesday to up to five years on each count, with three terms to run concurrent. Judge Michael Villani suspended the sentence, imposed five years' probation, and ordered her to serve 90 days in jail. She also must pay $49,000 in restitution.

Her husband and mother also received suspended sentences, probation, 30 days in jail, and were ordered to pay more than $9,000 in restitution.
