Workers injured in Strip site accident

Two iron workers were taken to University Medical Center Thursday morning after being injured by a large beam at the Strip's Fountainebleau construction project.

The men, whose names haven't been released, were on the top floor of the project when the 6 a.m. accident occurred, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison said.

One of the men received injuries to his head, shoulders and leg and the other complained of lower back pain. Allison said their injuries are non-life threatening and both were conscious the entire time.

Firefighters had to bring the men from the 63rd floor to waiting paramedics via crane and basket, Allison said.

"We call it 'flying them down,' " Allison said. "A paramedic is with them the entire time."

Allison was unsure how many other people were working when the accident occurred or how the beam struck the men.

Nevada's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, will conduct an investigation into the incident, said spokesperson Elisabeth Shurtleff. She said OSHA does not comment on construction accidents while investigations are under way.

The $2.9 billion Fountainebleau Las Vegas is a mixed-used project that began construction in February 2007 and is expected to be completed by 2009. Work on the project halted while firefighters and paramedics assisted the men and resumed shortly after.
